There is an Orientation and Course Selection Night on Tuesday, February 25 at 6:30-8:30PM at MHS.for parents and students currently in grade 8 who will be attending Medway High School next year.   More details to follow!

High School Schedule Adjustment Due to Snow Day

As tomorrow was scheduled to be the day before mid-term exams, when many teachers answer last-minute questions from students, we have decided to shift our schedule back one day. This results in the MHS school schedule for this week and next being as follows:

Jan 22: Snow day IF it is announced.
Jan 23: Day 1 schedule (regular dismissal at 2:31PM)
Jan 24: Exams for blocks A & B; Buses leave school at 11:30AM
Jan 27: Exams for blocks C & D; Buses leave school at 11:30AM
Jan 28: Exams for blocks E & F; Buses leave school at 11:30AM
Jan 29: Exams for blocks G & Make-up exams; Buses leave school at 9:30AM; There will also be a late bus at 11:20AM on January 29.
Jan 30: Will be a Day 3 and start of Semester 2
Jan 31: Day 4 schedule

MassBay College Courses Offered at Medway High School

Mass Bay Community College Courses Offered at Medway High School

On January 21, 2014, MassBay will for the first time be offering for-credit classes at Dedham and Medway High Schools.

UPDATE - Jan 15, 2014: I just heard from MassBay. For this semester, a student must be 16 years old to take their courses at our campus. They anticipate opening courses to all HS students for next fall if the courses are offered at Medway. -DD

At MassBay we are proud to be the most affordable college in MetroWest, and with these new locations we intend to be the most convenient as well.

The courses being offered in Dedham and Medway are:

Art Fundamentals (Mondays)
Computers and Technology (Tuesdays)]
Introduction to Business (Wednesdays)
Introduction to Psychology (Thursdays)

Courses will take place from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm and will run from the week of January 21st through the week of May 5th. Final exams will take place the week of May 12th. Note: Art Fundamentals will start Monday, January 27th.

These courses are credit-bearing, and they do not require the completion of prerequisite courses. As with most MassBay courses, the credits earned are transferable to many associate and bachelor degree and certificate programs in the region.

These three credit courses will cost $522* (Massachusetts Residents). You may be eligible for financial aid. Please contact the MassBay Financial Aid Office at finaid@massbay.edu.

Flu Reminders

 Below are some flu reminders from Mrs. Babicz, our school nurse:

Distinguishing Flu vs. Cold
Influenza (or flu) is different from a cold. Both a cold and the flu are respiratory illnesses, yet they are caused by different types of viruses with different symptoms. The flu usually comes on suddenly. To recognize flu symptoms, remember Flu F.A.C.T.S. (Fever, Aches, Chills, Tiredness, and Sudden onset). Children can have additional flu symptoms that are rare in adults, including vomiting and diarrhea.

Flu Facts

• Children are two to three times more likely than adults to get sick with the flu.
• Children can pass the flu virus to others for a period of more than seven days after symptoms start.
• On average, one-third of family members in families with school-age children are infected with the flu each year.

Typically, influenza affects five to 20 percent of the U.S. population each year. While the flu season is unpredictable, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that the flu can peak anytime between November and March.5

Flu Transmission
Schools are a prime location for the flu virus to attack and spread. It can be challenging to prevent children from getting the flu during the school year because:

• Flu is a respiratory illness
• Flu viruses are spread mainly by respiratory droplets from coughing, sneezing and talking
• Droplets can spread to others up to about six feet away and may land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs
• Less often, a person may get the flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth or nose4

Preventing the Flu 
Vaccination is the cornerstone of flu prevention. The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older get a flu vaccine.
Good hygiene habits help control spread of the flu virus. Teach your child these tips to help prevent the spread of flu virus:    

• Cover your coughs and sneezes with the inside of your elbow or a tissue
• Wash your hands with soap and water
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth – germs spread this way

Antiviral flu medicines prescribed by a doctor attack the flu virus and may be an important adjunct to vaccination for flu prevention and control.

What to Do if Your Child Gets the Flu
Even with preventative measures, sometimes you or your child may still get the flu. If your child has flu symptoms, schedule an appointment with your pediatrician. Your pediatrician may prescribe an antiviral flu medicine that attacks the flu virus. Antivirals may be an important adjunct to vaccination for flu prevention and control. If your child gets the flu, it’s important that they spend time resting. Keep your child at home for at least 24 hours after his or her fever is gone.

Grade 9-11 Course Selection Information Night

On  Thursday, January 23, 2014, from 7-9PM,  there will be information distributed to parents on course selection for the 2014-2015 school year in the MHS Auditorium. Important updates include:

• New Courses
• Course selection process

The evening will provide opportunities for you to ask questions of Administration and our Educational Leaders.

This night is for current grade 9-11 parents (classes of 2015, 2016, 2017). A separate night for current grade 8 parents and students (class of 2018) is scheduled for February and will be announced next week.  

2013-14 Mid-Year Exam Schedule

Mid-year examinations begin on Thursday, January 23, 2014. The schedule is as follows:

Thursday, Jan. 23: 

• A Exam, 8:15-9:45; 
• B Exam, 10:00-11:30.

Friday, Jan. 24: 

• C Exam, 8:15-9:45; 
• D Exam, 10:00-11:30.

Monday, Jan. 27: 

• E Exam, 8:15-9:45; 
• F Exam, 10:00-11:30.

Tuesday, Jan. 28: 

• G Exam, 8:15-9:45; 
• Make-up Exam, 10:00-11:30. 

Buses will be on site for early dismissal at 11:30 on Jan. 23, 24, and 27. Morning bus runs are normal times.

On Jan. 28, bus pick-up at the high school is at 9:45, as there is only one exam and a makeup period scheduled for that final day. 

Semester 2 begins on Wednesday, January 29. It will be a Day 2.
