Canine Search Today- March 28

Dear MHS Community,
Today, in conjunction with the Medway Police Department and Metrolec K-9 unit, we conducted a drug search of our building and parking lots. This is not new to Medway High, as similar searches have been done in the past.

Safety is always our first priority, and we continue to work collaboratively with students, staff, parents, and law enforcement to do what is necessary to ensure a drug-free environment for learning. Today's exercise was another demonstration of our commitment to check and validate that our school is safe.

During the search today, all students were held in their classes with teachers as multiple Metrolec K-9 units investigated the hallways, locker rooms and random classrooms for the presence of illegal drugs. Individual students were not searched. In fact, there was no contact between the K-9 units and students. When a classroom was searched, all students were removed from the room prior to the unit's entry.

There was no contraband found in any of the classrooms or athletic and school lockers. In one of the over 100 vehicles reviewed by the units, drug paraphernalia was found. I am disappointed and concerned that anything was found on campus, even this small amount. The parents of those involved are being contacted, and we will follow school policy on imposing consequences with the goal of both sending a message that possession of drugs, paraphernalia, or alcohol on campus will not be tolerated, as well as providing assistance to the students involved.

As I stated earlier, no student is safe taking an illegal substance. Students learn when they feel safe, and can concentrate on the lesson being presented by their teacher. Today’s search was another attempt to help ensure that those students who mistakenly believe that they need illegal substances to manage or enjoy life get the help they need, and avoid a tragedy. Please view this email as an opportunity to speak with your student about the decisions that they make, and the potential impact that it can create.

Grade 9 (2017) Honors Testing Registration

Please click here (or cut and paste the link below) to register for Grade 9 Honors Testing. The Schedule is:

April 1 Math
April 3 Social Studies
April 8 Science
April 10 English

Testing begins at 2:15 pm at Medway Middle School. Students should report to the cafeteria, and bring a #2 pencil and pen.

Each test is 1 hour in length.

Students are encouraged to bring calculators to the Math and Science Tests. Cell phones and other electronic devices may not be used during testing.

We have a limited number of video recordings of our first presentation. By signing up and promising to watch the DVD, we will allow your child to purchase a ticket to the Ring Dance or Prom.

The Medway Boy's Varsity Hockey Division III Semi-Final playoff game, originally scheduled for today in Bourne as been rescheduled Saturday, March 9, at 5:30 p.m. at Brockton High School.

Student Fan Bus: Students who have signed up for the fan bus should be at MHS by 3:30 p.m. If you signed up and paid for the bus and are unable to go, you will be refunded your money next week.

Post Season Athletic Competitions

This year, we had 5 winter teams that have earned the right to continue competition into the post-season, including:

• Girl's Basketball
• Boy's Basketball
• Girl's Cheerleading
• Girl's Hockey
• Boy's Hockey

We are currently beginning the second week of the post-season competition, and have three teams remaining.  I am sure you are joining me in supporting them in the next round:

March 4: Boy's Varsity Basketball vs. Martha's Vineyard, in Taunton HS at 5:00 p.m.
The Boy's team recently defeated Cardinal Spellman and moves into the Division 3 South Sectional Semifinals.

March 8: Boy's Varsity Hockey vs. Holliston, at Gallo Arena in Bourne at 5:30 p.m.
The Boy's Team recently defeated Dover-Sherborn to move into Division 3 South Sectional Semifinals.

March 10: Girl's Varsity Cheer State Championship, At Tantasqua Regional High School- time TBD
The Girl's Team recently took 1st place in the Division 2 Regional Cheer Competition, and moves on to the MSSAA State Cheer Championship.

I want to acknowledge and thank all Medway High student-athletes for their hard work in support of themselves, their team, and school.

Grade 8 Student and Parent Course Selection Night

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students of the Class of 2017,

We wish to extend your first official welcome to the Medway High School!  Now that you are more than half-way through your eighth grade year, we are looking forward to your becoming a part of our high school community in September.  Medway High School is a wonderful place, designed to meet the needs of students of all abilities by providing a rigorous academic program, in addition to a broad range of elective offerings, and numerous extra-curricular opportunities.

This event is for all current grade 8 students and their parents.

So that you may learn about the high school, the MHS administration, staff, and students are presenting a program on Wednesday, March 20, 2013, beginning at 6:30 pm in our auditorium. This is an opportunity for you to ask questions about the high school and the many options that will soon become available to you.  

The administration, academic department heads, and athletic director will each give a brief overview of the ninth grade experience, and also talk about course expectations and the differences between levels at the high school.  You will then break into smaller groups and have an opportunity to tour our facility and hear from faculty and students about our many exciting academic, elective, and extra-curricular programs.  There will also be opportunities to talk informally with department heads and administrators. 

Please be aware that this event involves guided tours of the building. Our building is large, and I recommend that comfortable shoes be considered. The event concludes by 9:00 pm.
